Is Asian Flush Dangerous? What ALDH2 Deficiency Really Means

by GUSH GURU / Jul 22, 2026

The short answer: the flush itself won't hurt you in the moment, but it's a visible sign of ALDH2 deficiency — a reduced ability to clear acetaldehyde. Because acetaldehyde is a recognized carcinogen, researchers have linked heavy drinking in people who flush to a higher long-term risk of certain cancers, especially esophageal. The point isn't to alarm you; it's to take the signal seriously.

Why the flush is a marker worth respecting

When ALDH2 is sluggish, acetaldehyde lingers longer in your body every time you drink. Acetaldehyde is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen, and studies have associated frequent heavy drinking among people with the ALDH2 variant with elevated esophageal cancer risk. The flush is your body flagging that it's processing alcohol less efficiently.

What this does and doesn't mean

It does not mean an occasional drink is dangerous, or that you should panic. It does mean two things: don't push through heavy drinking just because you can hide the redness, and be especially wary of 'hacks' that mask the flush so you can drink more (see the Pepcid problem).

The healthiest response

Moderation matters more for people who flush, not less. Drink less and slower, eat and hydrate, and support the enzymes doing the work rather than silencing the signal. Here's the full how-to.

🍐 Where the pear comes in

The goal isn't to hide the flush — it's to help your body do its job. Gush is whole Korean pear, traditionally used to support the ADH and ALDH enzymes, sipped before you drink. Meet Gush →
